The Everlasting Flower
Unrequited Love

No, I don’t think you owe me anything, actually
I think I owe you a hell of a lot more than you do me
The blue skies on a summer’s morning and the crisp wind
On a winter’s night, you gave
But I never give, only take, only take
I think I owe you the white clouds and the white stars
But I never give, only take, only take
Do you think I am worthy of love, your love?
Or should I suffer, rot, as you do now?
I think I owe you the water that makes the grass grow and
The daisies that blossom amongst the weeds
And I mustn’t forget how you brought the sun and moon together
So that I could have the light, and the darkness: hope and peace
But I never give, only take, only take
Butterflies fly high
Higher than I have ever gone for you
I watch the two of them dance like wild flames
They are one and the same
Frogs take a leap of faith, sit on their lily pad, then splash
I watch the frogs paddle away in unison
They are inseparable
The robin chirps; it’s found a worm for one
But saves it for supper so they don’t go hungry
But I never gave, only took, until
Until there was nothing, nothing quite left to give
I am the bee, and you are my flower
You give me pollen. I don’t want it
But I take it because that is what you, and
Everyone expects of me
