A Lone Wolf

Unconditional Love

Just as I fall asleep

I take one last look at the man beside me and I

Disappear into the depths of the night

I often toss and turn quietly

At the thought of being a nameless woman

There’s no “Mrs this” or “Mr and Mrs that”

Just I and I alone

I found it rather fun

To think of a life before this one

A life where sleeping alone was peaceful

A life where wandering the streets was my sweet

Sweet pleasure. I was a lone wolf

But I was content

Just I and I alone

One day, on the streets, I wander

I see another lone wolf. This one is different

Tall but timid, confident yet shy

He had these blue, pearl eyes

That glistened like the water at the bottom of a seabed

I could feel myself swimming, drowning in them

“Help! Help!” I cried out, but it was too late

This wolf had my heart in his grasp

If you listen carefully, you’ll hear them

The wedding bells chime

Aching for two hearts to become one

But do you take this hand in marriage?

“I do, I do,” I plead.

How did you get here I ask?

I look at the man in front of me

This wolf has my heart in his grasp

We’re here now

This is the chapter of our lives

If you peer in, you’ll see them snuggled up

Warmed by the burning flames of his love

The pups are tucked in asleep and soon

So is he. And when he is

I try to unpick the seams of my reality

And so now, I take you back to the beginning

Just as I fall asleep

I take one last look at the man beside me and I

Now know that I was content before, because that was all I knew

For I did not know that I could love, and be loved

I did not comprehend the peace that I could find in another

Or the pleasure I would engulf and soon, embrace

We were a pack of wolves, not wandering lost

But running having found the path, and if not, many more to explore

I was okay being alone before but

I am now aware that my heart is there and

Although it may not be perfect

It is well and truly capable of, and wanting to be, loved
